Octopi Sky
Winner of the Marj Wilke Short Story Award
Octopi Sky is a quiet reflection on connection, curiosity, and the search for something beyond what we know. Winner of the Lauren E Daniels Encouragement Award as part of the Marj Wilke Short Story Competition, this story follows two beings—one above the ocean, one below—both questioning their place in the world. A fisherman, who has spent most of his life on the water, begins to wonder if there’s more beyond the endless blue. Beneath him, an aging octopus watches the boat above and contemplates the same.
Judge Josephine Moon described the story as “a lovely, quiet meditation on the connections between humans and animals, and nature and spirit, and dreams and our place in the world. A gentle vignette.”

Love Story: The Anthology brings together ten stories that explore love in all its forms—romantic, platonic, fleeting, and lifelong. Some stories are about connection, others about loss, and some about the quiet ways love shapes our lives.
In Love Story, you’ll find the prologue to Paper Rings, where young love unfolds and derails at 30,000 feet. You’ll meet Eleanor, the main character of Paper Rings, who’s planned, perfect life goes sideways very quickly. Octopi Sky, winner of the Lauren E Daniels Encouragement Award, follows a fisherman and an octopus—one above the water, one below—each contemplating what might exist beyond the only world they’ve ever known. In You’re On Your Own, Kid, we follow one girl through three defining stages of her life as she learns what it means to grow up, let go, and find herself along the way.
Love is often tied to memory, and Open When tells the story of a relationship through letters written across the years, revealing the highs, lows, and moments that changed everything. In Honeymooners, a woman embarks on her honeymoon alone, only to find that sometimes, life has other plans. Meanwhile, Message in a Bottle follows a woman on holiday who tosses a message into the sea, never expecting a reply—until one arrives, altering the course of her life.
Not all love stories are human. Ablaze tells the journey of two shingleback lizards fighting through fire and danger to reunite, proving that love exists in the most unexpected places. In Chesterfield Farm, a man purchases an abandoned bookshop and discovers a series of mysterious letters hidden within its walls, unraveling a forgotten love story from the past. Home follows a young woman on a road trip across Australia, as she realises that home isn’t always a destination—it’s something we carry with us. And in My Shadow, told through a girl’s diary entries, love, friendship, and mental health intertwine in a raw and honest look at the complexities of being human.
